The first Wizz Air flight in Debrecen was launched back in 2012, and since then the airline has installed two base aircraft at Hajdú-Bihar county seat. In 2019 Wizz Air carried nearly four hundred thousand passengers to and from Debrecen, exceeding the airline’s full-year traffic last year, an increase of nearly 57%.

“There are three regional airports in the region, from which Debrecen Airport is the busiest”, stated László Papp, the Mayor of Debrecen.

Over the past seven years, the airline has carried one and a half million passengers on 14 routes in 11 countries. Today in 2019 WIZZ Air offers 83 routes from Hungary, connecting Budapest and Debrecen with 30 countries, with low fares and high-quality onboard service.

Passenger traffic at the airport is breaking records year-on-year, with 380,000 passengers last year, an increase of more than twenty percent over the previous year. With around 600,000 passengers this year, it will be the biggest growth in the airport since its launch in 2012.

When Compared to Košice and Oradea airports, it is clear that Debrecen Airport is emerging as the region’s busiest regional airport.

The municipality is committed to further development of the airport, and in the coming years, working with the government, they are preparing comprehensive developments to enable significant capacity increases.

“Wizz Air remains committed to Hungary, Debrecen and the region, and provides more and more Hungarian travelers with a wider range of affordable travel options”, stated András Radó, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air.
